The Fraunhofer IPT
The Fraunhofer IPT develops systems solutions for production. We focus on the topics of process technology, production machines, production quality and metrology as well as technology management.
Our clients and cooperation partners represent all fields of industry: from aerospace technology to the automotive industry and its suppliers as well as tool and die making companies and the precision mechanics, optics and machine tool industries in particular.
The institute currently employs around 460 people who are dedicated to applying their creativity to a range of projects.
Our remit: to reflect on entire processes
Organization chart
The Fraunhofer IPT consists of four scientific research areas with a total of nine departments. A qualified team of administrative and technical staff supports the scientists in their work.
The Fraunhofer IPT draws together the expertise and experience from all fields of production technology: the four departments of process technology, production machines, production quality and metrology and technology management provide the skills and competencies needed to meet the specialized needs of industrial production companies and is supported by a wide range of internal services.
The directorship of the Fraunhofer IPT lies in the hands of our four professors. Together they form the board of directors of the Fraunhofer IPT and the WZL of the RWTH Aachen University.
Our mission statement
One can only convincingly convey something to others that one is entirely familiar with. This is the basis on which the Fraunhofer IPT operates.
Applied Research and Consulting
The task of the Fraunhofer IPT is to transfer research findings into economically viable and unique innovations in the field of production.
The Fraunhofer IPT promotes and conducts applied research, implements research results in an industrial context, and provides relevant and effective consulting services for the direct benefit of industry, thereby contributing significantly to the competitiveness of companies.
Fine machining & optics
Passion for Precision
The department “Fine Machining and Optics” deals with the research and development of technologies for the production and machining of precision components. With our know-how as well as the latest machine and software technology, we consider the entire process chain – from tool design to the design and simulation of manufacturing processes to the production of prototypes. Our technology portfolio includes automated fine machining, diamond cutting, ultra-precision grinding, polishing, micro- and nanostructuring as well as the molding of high-precision glass optics. As an application-oriented research institute, we work on concrete questions and implement the research results directly in industrial practice for the benefit of the project partners. We offer cooperation within the framework of publicly funded R&D projects and bilateral industrial projects.
